Dr. Janet Condy addressed Literary Workshop Participants |
MBABANE - From Monday, August 16 through Wednesday, August 19, Dr. Janet Condy conducted a literacy training workshop with Swazi Educators in Mbabane. The U.S. Embassy, in conjunction with Rotary Swaziland and MacMillan Publishing, is hosting a series of literacy workshops in the Kingdom of Swaziland.
The thirty-five program participants came from various parts of the Swazi educational system, including elementary schools, the University of Swaziland, and the Swaziland Reading Association. Dr. Condy, a professor at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, used the Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) system with the instructors to encourage an interactive approach to teaching reading.
Participants are asked to act out the stories, write their own books, and find other ways to make reading fun. The workshop was a resounding success, leading Dr. Condy to explore the possibility of developing a three to five-year plan to introduce CLE to all the schools in Swaziland.
